DIET or Did I Eat That!
Sep 14, 05 - 2:08 PM Bermudian Food

Any comments on Bermudian food? I just recently moved to the island and I
find the local food awful!

What is it with the peas and rice, chicken legs and macaroni and cheese?

No wonder these people are so fat. Their diets suck, as well as all the
other crap that they eat!! lol lol lol

Well to be honest, with all the foreigners here, you are welcomed to
venture to their restaurants, I don't know what you like but there are
Chinese, Jamaican, Indian, Italian & the American grease pit KFC
restaurants. I don't know what Canadians eat other than sandwiches &
smoke cigarettes and Limeys eat a lot of fish & chips (we can supply that
in Bermuda) So darling, you can broaden your eating habits and venture
over to all the foreigners restaurants........and enjoy ...I don't where
u hail from but have you ever seen the statistics in America with the
obesity?Huh

Get real. Why on earth do you insult the culture of people where you are
a guest! If people in Bermuda are fat, are they the only fat people and
where did you get your proof from that they are fat because of their
diet? Nobody is making you to eat any kind of food. If you don't like
local food, go to another place where they will serve you meal that you
want. But for the love of Mary get your head outta the gutter.

Sep 14th, 2005 - 5:15 PM Re: Bermudian Food

I agree on the food. It is really unhealthy overall and is contributing
to the obesity and diabetes epidemic in Bermuda.

That combined with the fact that there are very few sidewalks for people
to walk on and bike on is a dangerous combo.

As an expat that puts importance in eating healthy I really have to make
an effort to eat out in Bermuda. It is hard but can be done.
Unfortunately there isn't much variety.

I feel bad for the Bermudians though that don't have the knowledge of
what they should and shouldn't be eating. I heard a Bermudian lady (very,
very obese) say as I was getting a salad at Market place "A salad for
lunch, that is what fools eat". I just shook my head, and thought ?at
least I will probably be alive in 20 years?.

This problem IMO is one of the biggest problems facing Bermuda citizens.
If you don't have your health nothing else matters.

Do they not teach healthy eating in school in Bermuda?

Thanks for the positive responses and the restaurant info.
I will not bother to respond to the negative responses..I suspect that
these people have not been used to or have any knowledge of eating any
types of healthy cuisine.
Or have any knowledge in creative or gourmet food preparation.

Yours in health and fitness..

Sep 14th, 2005 - 9:20 PM Re: Bermudian Food

ooohhhh...sorry Bermudian gal..but I did not come to your lovely island
from the US, the UK or Canada..and HATE hamburgers!!!

FYI: There are several different nationalities working here on the
island...

With responses like yours and GURL BABY, I am now more convinced than
ever that it is the food that you are consuming..it has to be that peas
and rice combination!! LOL LOL LOL
It is definetly dulling your senses and vocabulary!! hee hee

And no, I am not OBESE or mildly overweight..I am quite slender and
exericse on a DAILY basis!!!
From what I have seen on the island..a lot of your women seem to have
unique identifying traits..big mouths and HUGE bottoms...LOL LOL LOL
Once again..it's the food..!!! LOL LOL
Have a good night...

DIET, i can tell you ain't black. haven't you learned that thin is out?
Men like a little sumthin sumthin to grip on to (not BONES!)especially
that ass. And peas and rice is not "bermudian" food. get your facts
straight.

DIET..or Did I Eat That?
Sep 14th, 2005 - 10:20 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Hmmm...Mzz Angel..I don't recall being gender specific on this
website...what made you assume that I am a female?

I have obviously disappointed you....lol lol

Also, maybe it is your island men that like huge bottoms.....you can
certainly not speak for all of us...You should travel a bit more...I do
not see a lot of huge bottoms in sexy jeans...not inexpensive
jeans..designer jeans like Dolce & Gabanna..and they DO NOT CARRY X-LARGE
sizes...heeee heee

Now it would be quite different if a lot of your women were shaped like
Beyonce or J'Lo..but indeed they are not...
Like I said before your bottoms are quite unique..what I didn;t mention
were that they are not incredibly attractive either...lol lol

Because they are HUGE..they are not evenly distributed..they look like
you can rest a tray on top of them!!! lol lol lol

now back to the food..And from from the Bermudian articles that I have
read..it appears that peas and rice are one of your local dishes..maybe
not national..but it is served here wuite often..
Would it be RICE and PEAS that you are talking about which is from one of
the other islands? And I believe they use pidgeon peas instead of black
eyed peas like Bermudians and Bajans do???
Hmmmm..talk about getting one's facts straight...

Oh my goodness!
Sep 15th, 2005 - 11:02 AM Re: Bermudian Food

I have something to add about the food and people's views on food in
Bermuda....nothing mean, just something I have never been able to
understand.

When I was working at a very well known American Company, we were told
that the Company had hired a Chef from Germany, who had been on the
island for years and years, to come and cook lunches for us.

I thought the food was amazing. He came up with dishes that I had not
seen or eaten in Bermuda, fantastic gourmet food, for a really great
price.

One day I went to the cafetaria and on return to my desk with an amazing
plate of food, I looked up to see a group of Bermudians looking at the
plate with disdain... and to tell me that I should start boycotting the
Chef as he was only cooking "white people food"!!

I asked what kind of food they would like to see there, and the reply was
"macaroni and cheese, chicken thighs and peas and rice"!

I can understand that they simply wanted some home cooking, but up to now
I still wonder what was wrong with the delicious food otherwise.

This group got their own way, and soon the Chef was outed.

I was never so depressed in all my life, with having to go back out on
the street each and every day to find something that I could eat! It just
seems like the choices out there are not healthy, or there is not enough
to choose from. Most people would just line up at the Deli, but that
scared me, as I would look at the size of the ladies behind the counter,
and run. I am just very self conscious of my figure, and exercise, which
I also noticed was not something that is an obsession in Bermuda.

Honestly, I think carbs are consumed on a horrifying basis over there,
and I also think that this is the reason why so many Bermudians come down
with various sicknesses, like Diabetes. Also, the constant usage of the
microwave to make these high sodium packaged dinners - that is crazy too,
and in my opinion, could be causing cancer. I fell into that trap at one
point, always in a rush, so it is convenient to just put that dinner in
the microwave!

Just my humble opinion.

Bon Appetite...
Sep 15th, 2005 - 11:26 AM Re: Bermudian Food

I am a Bermudian and I hate our cuisine..and I do know how to cook
it..but I refuse to eat it!!!
And it bad for you...very bad.

I eat sensibly, enjoy gourmet food and food in it's natural state...and
exercise regularly and DIET that is so true in his comments.
There are too many HUGE bottoms on the island!!! And then there are the
JELLY ROLLS in Spandex!

And some of you are still exercising...but it is what you are putting
your mouths...

Stop feeding that face because you have no man and if your man likes you
fat..it is only because he wants to keep you at home so that he can party
with racehorses like me!!

Stop eating the garbage!!! And try and lose some weight...all the clothes
that you stuff yourselves in..are not meant for people who have jelly
rolls and gyrating HUGE butts!! ..

There are some PLUS SIZE LADIES who look good in their clothes..not
everyone can be small..but just how healthy are you?Huh

Sep 15th, 2005 - 11:40 AM Re: Bermudian Food

Why is it that some Bermudians drink sweet drinks with their meals...?
Don't you want to taste the flavours of the food..or are you drinking
them to disguise bad food..your cuisine...lol lol

I went out for dinner the other night..and I saw a large group of
overweight women drinking pina coladas, sodas, fruit punches..ugh!
Can you imagine!!!

What happened to water, sparkling water and WINE!!!
I know that because of medical reasons, some people cannot drink
alcoholic beverages.
But did you know that some really fine wines can compliment foods...
And exactly what is 'white people's food '..I have heard of
segregation..but not food segregation..I don't ever recall seeing foods
at the supermarket with that label.....lol lol lol

I cannot even imagine drinking those sweet drinks with a three course
meal..a pina colada with salmon..yuck!!!

Sep 15th, 2005 - 12:09 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Listen all you of you who complain about our cuisine..get a life!

I am a 250lb Bermudian babe who loves to chow down on peas n'rice,
chicken, potato salad, macaroni and cheese and all on one plate..yeah!
I exerice regularly and I am in good health..and I have a man too...and
he loves my butt!
He doesn't like you racehorse women...says you don't know how to get your
groove on...
When him and I make music, he says he feels like a KING and his feet
NEVER touch the ground..he rolls on me like a beach ball...and he LOVES
it.
He says he feels like he is docking a cruise ship!!!

So, to all of you..who think that our cuisine is bad ..think again..it
has it's benefits too...it has kept me healthy and sexy all of these
years...yeah!!

I LOVE MY FOOD!!!

Oh my goodness!
Sep 15th, 2005 - 12:37 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Don't get offended, lady who likes food. I am sure you look amazing.

One thing about Bermudian women, they know how to put themselves together
in a great way.

I am only concerned with the rate of obesity on the island and the
outcome, which is diabetes, heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc. There is a
high rate of cancer and diabetes on the island, I have spoken to
Specialists who are hired from the US, Canada and Jamaica who have
confirmed this.

Just keep healthy!

I have enjoyed the Portuguese food here...apparently so has my now ample

I am now on a MASSIVE diet ....... UGHHHHHHH.......

Sep 16th, 2005 - 11:03 AM Re: Bermudian Food

No reason to insult the people of Bermuda just because you don't like the
food! Count me as one of the people that think Bermudian women look just
fine (by and large, obviously there are some exceptions but generally
they really know how to put themselves together!)

Its difficult and relatively expensive to eat healthy in Bermuda, but
definitely doable. When I first moved to the island in 2002 I was 175lbs
or so and dropped down to 155 in 2 months with a calorie restricted diet
and daily excersize, and managed to stay slim for the duration of my stay.

I find the quality in the restaurants that expats gather at to be quite
bad (Pickled Onion and Robin Hood are awful!) and maybe that is what is
giving you (the original poster) that perception. For a cheap place that
has good food and a big selection try Speciality Inn...at lunch The Lemon
Tree often has healthy good choices that are very reasonable too! And
there are lots of sushi places on the island that are very good!

One thing I will say is that in all the countries I have lived in I have
never seen someone take a cinnamon bun, slice it in half, stuff it with
bacon, egg and cheese and put the top half back on and call it a
breakfast sandwich. Yikes! Less of that please! Even in Texas they don't
eat like that...

Good wishes to all!

Sep 16th, 2005 - 1:47 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Is this discussion over Bermudian cuisine a front to really poke fun at a
persons race as well as their national status?I mean if you were in
America you would be referring to the "black" foods that they eat (fried
chicken, colored greens, etc). I understand that everyone is entitled to
free speech but if this is a race thing dont sugar coat it(then it
wouldn't be funny anymore). Everyone is different and obviously the
people making these comments want people to have habits just like them
figuring it would make the world a better place I guess. Actually what is
it that you guys want? Do you want Bermudians to eat the way that you do
or live the way that you do to make you feel more comfortable? Or do you
just want to point out the differences and make Bermudians a laughing
stock and see yourself at a higher standard to make you feel good and not
facilitate change(which really isn't needed)?

DIET or Did I Eat That!
Sep 16th, 2005 - 2:16 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Thanks again for the food /restaurant suggestions...

This forum is not sugar coated to talk about anyone's race..
FAT people come in all colours!!

Lots of people of colour dislike your type of foods..in fact I believe
that there was one response from a Bermudian who had similar views...and
who knows..she may have been a black Bermudian...

And....what the hell are "black" foods. I know about 'Soul' foods...it is
not just a black thing..it's about cooking for the soul....get it...LOL
LOL..

I am talking about eating GOOD FOOD!!

So don't start on the RACE thing!! No one has mentioned it here with the
exception of YOU!

Your cuisine sucks and I will be looking at other alternatives..thank
you!!

It does always strike my visiting friends as funny that the only

something there, but its not a nice something so I won't repeat it!

Okay well we have establised that this discussion on Bermuda cuisine
isn't a race thing. You feel our cusine sucks. Everyone is entitled to
their opinion. What is your cusine? I bet you if I took a crack at it I
might be able to come up with a few witty comments. Hmm could it be
bratwurst with saure***** (sheesh I can't even spell it)? Bangers and
mash? That is a classic. Or could it be "gourmet" served at these
restaurants that make you feel like you have burned a hole in your pocket
for an appetizer? You know you are still hungry. But if it makes you feel
happy and healthy eating things you can't pronounce than more power to
you.

The NON EXPAT
Sep 16th, 2005 - 4:37 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Hey you got a problem with Bermuda food? I got the perfect Solution...
1) Go to Court street and say it to a Bermudian... I bet you'll like the
taste of a knuckle sandwich, since you can't take real food.
2) Or you can just starve... most expats have never made so much money in
their life, so at least starving would remind you of home.
I bet you'll take option 2), since all expats are scared to death of
bermudians, especially Court street.

Man non-expat is right. Maybe you should not have shared your sentiments.
You don't watch TV? To be more specific American Television? You know
discovery channel and the like. I would be polite to people that prepare
my food as much as possible because if you arent then you might get more
than you bargained for. LOL too late the word is out. Before you go out
to eat with your mates you better ask the question: "Do Bermudians
prepare the food?"
But anyway have a nice weekend and be sure to brush those bermudian pubic
hairs loose.

Sep 16th, 2005 - 6:59 PM Re: Bermudian Food

I don't eat anywhere that a bermudian might work in a kitchen, I have
seen the one or two bermudian cooks that exist on the island and that
scares me off. Not to worry, most kitchens are 99% ex-pats here. By the
way, I don't mind a little mac and cheese, peas and rice every once in a
while. Also, the reason some ex-pats MIGHT be afraid of bermudians is
because a bermudian could attack you, in daylight, and people on the
street would just stand and watch, and mysteriously, there would be no
witnesses to the crime.

Sri Lankan Fish Chowder?
Sep 16th, 2005 - 10:53 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Hmmmmm. How come a restaurant that serves Bermudian cuisine has Sri
Lankans working in it making fish chowder...

Boozer
Sep 16th, 2005 - 11:21 PM Re: Bermudian Food

Actually it's not Bermudian food that sucks it's American food that
sucks. The only food I can think of that is really Bermudian is Fish
Chowder, everything else is Americanor Italian.

Fried chicken and peas and rice are not Bermudian, they are American.

Cod fish and Potatoes is Bermudian and thats good to.

The fact is American food stinks, it's always greasy, unhealthy and has
to be splattered in Mayo.

So although Bermuda does suck(not the women though) the original
Bermudian food is pretty good, it's just the rubbishy tourist trap
resturants.

Sep 17th, 2005 - 8:49 AM Re: Bermudian Food

1. why trash our food? food is a part of one's culture and heritage. if
you don't like it, then sorry, but it won't change for you. i've been to
several countries like the US, Canada and Britain, and i suppose i could
say that their food sucks, but that is a part of their society, of their
culture. if i don't like it, i won't eat it. end of the story.

2. stop being so superficial. not all big people are like that because
they stuff they're faces with bad food all day long. i know some skinny
ppl who eat worse than so called fat ppl and don't gain a pound.
sometimes the issue lies deeper than that. don't diss ppl who struggle
with their weight until you've walked a mile in their shoes.

3. DIET, you sound about as shallow as they come. i understand you don't
like our food. your entitled to your opinion. but before you trash it,
remember where you are. and stop dissing women with huge bottoms. for
some people, BEAUTY is skin deep. As perfect as you try to make yourself
out to be your not. (although you will more than likely deny it) And
nobody else it either. it is only because society says fat isn't
beautiful, that everyone else does. try getting to know people before you
trash them on their appearences and what they put in their mouths.

Also my apologies to bdagal..I'm sorry I made you cry..I promise not to
say anything more about FAT people and women with HUGE bottoms..is that
o.k. with you???

Shall we call a truce...lol lol lol

P.S. Where is that restaurant where the Sri Lankans work..the one that
makes the Bermudian fish chowder..that sounds like a fat free dish... lol

Sep 17th, 2005 - 11:12 PM Re: Bermudian Food

The negative expats are ruining it for the decent ones tremendously! And
listen up...EXPATS complain about the high cost of living (which we all
do), but come on...you are getting paid! Instead of saving it all up to
buy your poor trailer trash mommie a house back in la la land (that you
fleed from yourself), why not splurge on groceries and make your own
meals!

And what the heck is wrong with my main man Boozer? You are a horn-ball
all you talk about is Bermudians giving head. Are you gay? You must be
gay Boozer. A gay expat...almost a better combination than our fish cakes
on a bun with ketchup! Sweet! Change your name to ******** let us guess
the meaning cause it has a couple of them).

I dont hate expats, I just think they are cowards who write on this page
because they need the money to send home to their poor families that
struggled to pay for their undergrad. It is ok though...you will be gone
soon! Laugh that off CRACKER!

Who are you idiotic people. Their are fat people in every country you go
to. I think this is utter rubbish. No one has asked you to eat the food
in this country. Go to the grocery store and buy your own ingredients and
cook your own food. To come to a country and constantly bash it is
horrible. America has the fattest people and its been proven in surveys,
canada is not far behind. why, because all they eat it is cheap mcdonalds
and burger king really it all they can afford $2 and $3 dollar meals.
I get the impression that many of you people that are bashing this island
are really jealous of bermudians. why? because they have one of the
highest standards of living in the world. they walk around with Louis
vuitton bags and have the best of cars and clothes even the people that
cant afford $3000 for an apt. Their poverty does not compare to the
proverty in other countries like the states and canada you know it and i
know it.

Bermudian Born and Raised
Sep 19th, 2005 - 1:57 AM Re: Bermudian Food

First of all I was born and raised in Bermuda and there is nothing wrong
with my health. I have been brought up on the peas and rice, mac and
cheese and chicken legs. I was also brought up on the PORK too so if you
think that something is wrong with our food you need to either go back to
ur country and eat their **** or starve.

White Bermudian- Not that it makes a difference.
Sep 19th, 2005 - 4:54 AM Re: Bermudian Food

A couple of points.

First off, if the food in this country is such a problem, why stay?
No-one is forcing you to.

Second, I can understand the fat **** comments, they are very true, the
island has a lot of women with a bit extra in that area of their body.
Not a bad thing, it shouldn't be used to make someone feel bad.

Third, I hear that there are these new inventions, i think they're called
"Supermarkets". If you have a problem with the food, get off your
"skinny" **** and make something healthy for yourself.

Fourth, I think that above everything else the alcohol consumption on
this islandis probably as big a contributor, if not more so than the
food. I know I've gained a good 10 pounds since June, and I eat very
healthily.

Fifth, I happen to know a few of the "Dope Fiends" from not only Court
Street but from the other areas of Bermuda, and I'm sure they would love
for you to come and talk to them, my piece of advice, we may not be
Compton or Brixton, but I'd still watch my mouth if i were you.

Sixth, (and on a tangent) if the cost of living is too high for you, go
buy a double-wide back at home, you'd probably feel right at home.

Seventh, as a guest on the island (and you are a guest- very much
replaceable) appreciate the pink sand, the lovely water and the quaint
houses because, lets face it, even the best of you won't be around for
any more than six years, then you're only a tourist...and everyone loves
tourists

Sep 19th, 2005 - 10:03 AM Re: Bermudian Food

I just wanted to post a non-rant non-rave post for Diet or Did I Eat
That...

i don't care what you say this is an open forum of discussion or is
supposed to be and people are allowed to say what they wish, so that
means if they say against you it's OK, stop being hypocritical. you're
just being an ass... or maybe you like provoking people

if you hadn't noticed, Bermuda doesn't really HAVE a cuisine of it's own,
as Hack The Knife so graciously mentioned in one of his articles. All the
cuisine here is borrowed from somewhere else. There's food from different
countries coming out of our ass here... you can't say there's no choice.
okay, maybe we don't have GERMAN food, but they tried it and it didn't
catch on.

if you're going to be snarky, do your research first. it's always best to
be able to back up what you say. not all Bermudians are FAT either, a lot
are health concious. did you ever notice that or are you too blinded by
the fact that you'd rather bash our country than look for the good in it.

besides. when you enter a new culture it's all about opening your mind to
it, not closing it. in that way, you aren't any better than "the rest of
us" who apparently "hate" you.
